“The enemy fleet is firing again, sir,” Captain Ewing reported. “I . . .”

“I can see that,” Greg snapped.

He regretted it instantly. It was his aide’s job to make sure he knew what was happening, even if it meant telling him something he already knew. The enemy fleet was belching missiles, vomiting wave after wave of death towards his fleet . . . He clasped his hands tightly, trying not to panic. His career would be made if he survived the battle. No one could question his competence after he won . . . He’d finally have the freedom he’d always wanted, the influence to build a power base of his own . . .

His ship shook, violently. Greg felt his heart skip a beat. The enemy seemed to have singled out King Travis for special attention, although it wasn’t clear if they knew she was the flagship. They probably did, he thought, as another missile slammed into his vessel. He tried not to look at the status display as alarms began to howl. The king knew everything about his navy. Hadrian had practically controlled the Royal Navy, damn him. He probably had spies and saboteurs on every command deck. Greg had placed marines on guard duty, but could the marines be trusted? He didn’t know if anyone could be trusted.

“Incoming,” an officer shouted. “They’re targeting us!”

Greg lost his footing as the hammer of an angry god slammed into his ship. A dozen consoles blanked, the lights flickering and dimming as main power failed. The entire compartment went dark, just for a second. Emergency power came on a moment later, but the consoles remained blank. The status reports were gone.

He was no longer in command. Another missile slammed home . . .

Alarms howled. The lights dimmed again. The gravity started to fade. The captain’s voice echoed through the compartment. “Abandon ship! All hands, abandon ship!”

Greg forced himself to stand, to snap orders for an orderly evacuation, but it was already too late. The entire compartment seemed to blaze with light . . .

. . . And then there was nothing.
